My Creative Journey: Designing & Beyond

Updated: Apr 7

Designing the Burnt Out Millennial (mix) Album Cover

One of my most recent projects was creating the cover for the Burnt Out Millennial (mix) album. I wrote all the lyrics and published all the songs. The goal was to capture the mood of a generation quickly. I chose greyscale to represent the tension and loss of hope. The iconic throw-back visual of a burned CD evokes nostalgia. It reminds us of how the CDs we burned were a mix of styles and genres. The typography had to be clear, honest, and moody, matching the album’s vibe.

This project pushed me to balance emotion with clarity. I experimented with color contrasts and layering to create depth. Eventually, I landed on a purely greyscale design that showed true simplicity and restraint. It showcases the title and imagery more than complex colors and busy design. The final design invites viewers to feel the mix’s potential before even hearing a single track.

Crafting Newsletters and Marketing Emails

Designing newsletters and marketing emails requires a different skill set. I focus on three key aspects: (1) creating an immediate desire to read more and not delete, (2) ensuring quick readability and consumption, and (3) encouraging clickable engagement. I work to create layouts that guide the reader’s eye naturally. I always ask, "Why do I care?" I use clear headings, concise text blocks, minimized word count, and well-placed images.

For example, in a recent email campaign, I wanted to bring in subject experts. I used a clean grid layout with bold calls-to-action. The goal was to make it easy for readers to find key information and respond quickly. I also pay attention to mobile responsiveness, ensuring the design looks great on any device.

Creating Table Signs for Novels and Kids' Books

Table signs might seem small, but they play a big role in presenting my novels and children’s books at events. They need to be eye-catching and informative without overwhelming the space. The goal is to invite people in to pick up the book and learn more. You need your elevator pitch, both verbally and visually, to be two seconds long.

Exploring Floor Plans and Art for Creative Challenges

Sometimes, I step away from traditional graphic design and dive into floor plans or abstract art. These projects satisfy my desire for structure and creativity at the same time.

Designing floor plans challenges me to think spatially and practically. I enjoy imagining how people move through spaces and how design can improve their experience. Abstract art, on the other hand, lets me experiment freely with shapes, colors, and textures without rules.

Both types of projects refresh my creative energy and inspire new ideas for other work.

The Power of Collaboration

Collaboration is a vital part of my creative process. Working with others brings fresh perspectives and ideas. I often team up with writers, musicians, and other artists. Together, we explore new concepts and push each other’s boundaries. This synergy leads to innovative results that I couldn’t achieve alone.

For instance, collaborating on the Burnt Out Millennial (mix) album cover involved discussions with a trusted designer who I know will give honest feedback. We exchanged ideas, and I incorporated their feedback into the design. This partnership made the final product resonate more deeply with the intended audience.

The Importance of Feedback

Feedback is crucial in the creative process. It helps me refine my work and see it from different angles. I seek input from peers and clients alike. Their insights often reveal aspects I might have overlooked. Constructive criticism can be challenging, but it’s essential for growth.

After completing a project, I often ask for feedback. I want to know what resonates and what doesn’t. This practice helps me improve my future designs and ensures I’m meeting the needs of my audience.

Bringing It All Together

Each creative project I begin teaches me something new. From the emotional storytelling in an album cover to the practical clarity of a newsletter, every design has its own purpose and audience. The variety keeps my work exciting and pushes me to grow as an artist.

I invite you to explore your creativity. Whether through design, writing, or any other medium, let your ideas flow. Embrace the challenges and learn from each experience. Remember, creativity often shows up in unexpected ways. So, keep an open mind and let your imagination soar!
